In the 1930s, some German newspapers issued free cards each week, not unlike cigarette manufactures who printed stamps. While their subjects were often educational—animals or exotic lands—these cards were mostly intended to induce readers to collect them, thus spurring newsstand sales. In 1931, the Berlin Morning Post issued the following card set devoted to the "Wonder of Life." Often bizarre, the cards illustrate the principals of biology with surreal juxtapositions and odd cross-section views.
